My documentary idea: A surf film documenting the early days of surf culture in Guatemala through the story of a small surf club located in a tiny village in Guatemala. The club works together to make wave riding possible, collecting surfboards and pooling funds to repair broken boards. In a country with an estimated 150 local surfers, resources are low and boards hard to come by.
With less boards than there are members the club manages board rentals, repairs and scheduling along with rules to keep members active in school and sharing surf time equally.
The stoke of surfing has played an important role in the lives of the club members, providing work opportunities and guiding youngsters away from drugs and alcohol. They are more than just a club, they are brothers of the waves, surfing for the love of it, rain or shine, broken boards, whatever.
