I began making this film about my father, Grandmaster Pui Chan, because I wanted to document his amazing life. My world has been opened far more than I ever realized by learning about my heritage, culture, and the struggles my parents faced as immigrants to the United States. I am proud and inspired that my parents were both able to achieve the American Dream.
The story of my father begins with his life in Communist China before the war. He escaped China in hope's of a better life, risking everything, including his life.
As a kung fu practitioner from 6 years old, he learned the values of hard work and perseverance. His kung fu propelled him to venture to the USA and make a life for himself as a prominent kung fu master. Daring to achieve the American Dream, Pui overcame racism, poverty, and adversity in America to start a legacy that lives on today. The now highly recognized Grandmaster Pui Chan, is one of the pioneers responsible for bringing traditional Kung Fu to America and built the first Kung Fu Temple in America. His story has already inspired and touched the lives of thousands of viewers.
I am excited that the film has won an award at every festival it has screened at totaling 10 awards to date, including Best Documentary, Best Historical Documentary, Most Inspiring, and Audience Choice Awards.
We are currently deciding on which path of distribution to take, but we will definitely be releasing it soon!
