Which Is Best Lens For Canon 7D and Filmic Documentary?

by Reinhard

I am going to do a filmic documentary & would like to know which lens would be most suitable for the Canon 7d Mark II? So far I have heard the 50mm, but which one?

Much of it will be inside pool halls, and traveling via bus, coach & train.. so no action nor zooming needed.

Thank you
Reinhard

Hi Reinhard. I would recommend the Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM lens to use with the crop sensor on the Canon 7D. You may find that the 50mm lens does not allow you to show the wider aspect of the scenes you are going to shoot. The 28mm will work better in tight and confining areas (like on a bus). This lens costs around $500 (US). Depending on your budget you may want to get the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II as a back-up lens. It only costs around $100(US).

Another lens to consider is the affordable Canon EF 85mm f/1.8. It costs around $300(US). This will allow you to get closer to the action without having to be on top of the action.

If you only want to get one lens, get the Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM lens.

Good luck with your project. Hope that helps!

Best Lens with 7D
by: Wayne Turner

Hi

I use the 7D for doccies and short films. My two lenses are the 50mm L f1.2 (amazing in low light) and the 17-40mm L f4.

Hope this helps.
